Innovations in Retirement Financing (Pension Research Council Publications)
Published in Hardcover by University of Pennsylvania Press (February, 2002)
Authors: Olivia S. Mitchell, Zvi Bodie, P. Brett Hammond, Stephen Zeldes, and Wharton School Pension Research Council
Average review score:

Book Overview
Only half of working Americans admit they have thought about saving for retirement, and many of those who do try to save, don't know if they are setting aside enough to support themselves in old age. How, then, can employees, their employers, and the public sector boost old-age financial security? The contributors to this volume--economists, financial advisers, and housing and benefits specialists --argue that a strong retirement income system requires attention not only to assets conventionally dedicated to retirement purposes such as pensions, but also to the broader determinants of retiree wealth including housing, health, longevity, and intellectual capital.

This book outlines key problems involved in reducing financial risks in retirement, and then it goes on to propose fresh solutions. These include cash-balance pension plans that combine features of traditional defined benefit pensions and increasingly popular defined contribution plans. Other novel approaches discussed include reverse-annuity mortgages permitting people to benefit from the value of their homes without actually selling them, various forms of annuities, and long-term care insurance. A framework chapter sets the stage by examining what retirement planning can be expected to accomplish and how planning reduces risks by hedging, insuring, and diversifying. This book should be required reading for all who seek to strengthen retirement decision-making and old age protection.

Olivia S. Mitchell is Executive Director of the Pension Research Council and International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans Professor of Insurance and Risk Management at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Zvi Bodie is Professor of Finance at Boston University, P. Brett Hammond is Manager of Corporate Projects at TIAA-CREF. Stephen Zeldes is Benjamin Rosen Professor of Economics and Finance at Columbia University.

Into the Whirlwind: A Translation of the Book of Job
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (May, 1979)
Author: Bible. O.T. Job. English. Mitchell. 1979.
Average review score:

Needed: A New Publishing for Stephen Mitchell's Translation
Too bad this book is out of print. This is the most marvelous translation! The clarity of the story and the beauty of the poetry make it so worthwhile reading; the Afterword and Notes present further opportunities for study. A very scholarly work, I at last feel that I really understand the Book of Job, after years of questioning passages which lacked adequate translation into today's English. Stephen Mitchell has done the English-speaking world a great service. This book deserves a new publishing, in paperback, as well as in hardback.

IRAD: Interactive Radiology Review & Assessment (CD-ROM for Windows & Macintosh, Single User)
Published in CD-ROM by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Publishers (15 December, 2000)
Authors: Felix S., Md. Chew, Mitchell J. Kline, and Gary J. Whitman
Average review score:

Essential!
This has to be the #1 product on CD-ROM for reviewing radiology! I used it to prepare for boards and even used it to review cases while on the airplane to Louisville. iRAD contains tons of cases with high quality images, a description of the findings, a pertinent differential, the diagnosis, and a full discussion. It is conveniently organized into ten sections (chest, nucs, GI, etc.) and even has a final posttest (you don't have to submit your answers unless you need the CME's). Multiple choice questions with each case are a great way to simulate an oral examination, either alone or in groups.

The irrelevant English teacher
Published in Unknown Binding by Temple University Press ()
Author: Josiah Mitchell Morse
Average review score:

A Little-Noticed Gem
At least 14 years have passed since I read this charming book, and it must have been 12 years old then. I shall never forget the author's advice to read some Thomas Campion first thing every morning "to clear the blood." I also remember his gloss on Brother Lawrence's "[I]n the noise and clatter of my kitchen, while several persons are at the same time calling for different things, I possess God in as great tranquillity as if I were upon my knees at the blessed sacrament."
The study of the liberal arts brings insights and attitudes that contrast with the ones relevant for any particular moment in history. A good English teacher knows the irrelevant. Irrelevant beauty lights the darkness of whichever present in which one is living, and the irrelevant past shows that much of what we think is a necessity of human life, was once very different. (Of course, to the extent that that past is the same, it is what is timeless and necessary.)
The style of this book is elegant.

Other good books that are similar are Neil Postman's Teaching as a Conserving Activity and Amusing Ourselves to Death.
Another elegant book with profound reflections on the uses of history and literature is George Orwell's 1984.

"It Is I, Sea Gull" - Valentina Tereshkova
This book is a brilliant portrayal of a Russian cosmonaut's daring trip into space. Tereshkova became the first woman in space, breaking barriers for women all over the world. The book tells her story from childhood to receiving the prestigious Order of Lenin award, and was hailed as a Soviet Hero. I dream of becoming an astronaut someday and this book inspired me to follow my dreams further. This is a fantastic book and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading a "good book!" :)

J.Neel Reid Architect: Of Hentz, Reid & Adler & the Georgia School of Classicists
Published in Hardcover by Golden Coast Publishing Company (January, 1998)
Authors: William R. Jr. Mitchell and James R. Lockhart
Average review score:

Book shows why Neel Reid was one of greatest of the South.
The book gives history and insight on his life and follows his working history from Macon to Florida to Atlanta. His attention to detail is pointed out in many chapters and the photography along with the orginal drawings are a good touch. If your looking for some ideas or maybe a facade to copy this would be a excellent book. Most of his houses are timeless designs and the interior views and elevation views are stunning.

Author's Review
When I wrote this book on Jamaica Plain, MA
I was amazed at the rich history of this neighborhood of Boston that was once a part of Roxbury and originally known as the Jamaica End of town. With the Arnold Arboretum, and the Bussey Institute, Jamaica Plain became part of the Emerald Necklace and retains a bucolic and suburban setting. Hopefully, a text history of Jamaica Plain will be written shortly to augment this
photographic history.
